Cancer care in Singapore has gaps, and the people closest to the disease know them best.
In this advocacy paper, Singapore Cancer Society draws on the lived experiences of patients, survivors, and caregivers, alongside expert consensus, to surface key gaps across the full cancer journey.
Grounded in research and SCS’s over six decades of direct experience supporting cancer patients, the paper puts forward Seven Asks spanning patient navigation, screening, treatment affordability, rehabilitation, and return-to-work support.
The Seven Asks:
- Make patient navigation part of healthcare reform – Every patient should have access to guidance and support throughout their journey.
- Strengthen cancer prevention through screening and education – More efforts are needed to encourage early detection and healthier lifestyles.
- Ensure accessible and affordable cancer treatment— Financial barriers should not prevent anyone from receiving life-saving care.
- Integrate rehabilitation needs assessment into the cancer care journey– Every patient should be assessed for rehabilitation needs and supported with appropriate care pathways based on clinical assessment.
- Support cancer patients in returning to work— Employers should provide fair opportunities and workplace support for those affected by cancer.
- Recognise that cancer affects younger people too — Early detection and targeted support for young patients are crucial.
- Build a strong support system for cancer patients – The community plays a vital role in the well-being of those affected by cancer.
No single organisation can close these gaps alone. The Asks are an invitation for a whole-of-society response.
